For over 13 years, the Japan Language and Cultural Center has been serving the needs and interests of the Rhode Island Japanese community as well as those with interest in learning more about Japanese language and culture. The Rhode Island Japan Society sponsors various cultural events local to Rhode Island, as well as participating in events all over New England. Language classes are offered regularly from basic levels up to intermediate and advanced. Cultural classes on Japanese sweets making, oragami, shiatsu and more
are periodically offered as well as group trips and potluck dinners. Non-Japanese speaking people are always welcome at all events, interest is the only requirement!.

Upcoming Events
In September, the state of Rhode Island celebrated it's 16th annual Heritage Day festival out on the state house lawns. Among the many nations and ethnic groups represented, the Rhode Island-Japan Society was there serving up
up plates of yakisoba along with demonstrations of calligraphy, crafts, origami and karaoke. Several members of
the Rhode Island Japanese community will be lent a hand with the cooking and serving. The yakisoba is always a great hit and many people who had never had the pleasure of experience genuine Japanese cooking expressed their pleasure with requests for seconds!
Monthly and Weekly Events
The Rhode Island-Japan Society hosts several monthly and nearly weekly events such as potluck dinners, lunches and visits from Japanese markets such as Itadakimasu from Boston. For further information, call (401) 273-3266 (days) or (401) 421-5296 (evenings).
Past Events
The summer of 1998 has been very interesting and fun! Starting off with the annual food and crafts sale in May, the society later took part in Newport's 26th Annual Black Ships Festival. Several members attended the famous Taiko Drum Festival
and enjoyed the skilled, but loud performance by five of the world's finest taiko drum groups. After that a demonstration in Conversational Japanese was offered to the general public and was very well received. Many visitors to the Japan Society's tent had never uttered a single word of Japanese u
ntil that day, and left confident in the basics for greetings and self-introduction. Cheers go to Hiroko Nakano for leading the class, and Miki-san for her organization.
This page was created for the Rhode Island-Japan Society. Members of the organization provide the necessary information, and some of the comments are my own as this page is an off shoot of my own pages which are listed below.
